ASC – Aquaculture Stewardship Council

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), fisheries and ASC Chain of Custody (CoC) standards help companies and organisations to promote and identify farm grown fish as having been responsibly produced. The CoC certification process covers fish from ‘farm to plate’ to ensure traceability for all products. Control Union Services is accredited by ASI (Accreditation Services International) for the ASC and ASC CoC program.

    About the certification

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is an organization established in 2010 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Dutch Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) to provide the world’s leading certification program for the aquaculture industry. It addresses a variety of aquaculture processes globally and considers both the environmental and social aspects to ensure responsible production. ASC-certified products must also be certified according to the Chain of Custody (CoC) standards. These regulations provide rules for the purchase, processing, and sale of certified ASC products.

ASC standards cover the following principles:

    1. Legal Compliance (Complying with laws and respecting legal rights)
    2. Conservation of Natural Environment and Biodiversity
    3. Conservation of Water Resources
    4. Preservation of Species and Wild Populations (e.g., preventing escapes that could threaten wild fish)
    5. Responsible Use of Animal Feed and Other Resources
    6. Animal Health (Prohibition of unnecessary use of antibiotics and chemicals)
    7. Social Responsibility (e.g., prohibition of child labor, health and safety of workers, freedom of association, community relations)

    How you benefit

As the demand for protein-rich foods increases, fish consumption is on the rise. Eating fish is generally considered healthier, more affordable, and better for the environment compared to meat. Today’s consumers are demanding responsible aquaculture. ASC focuses on environmental and social aspects.

    • Benefits for ASC certificate holders include maintaining existing market positions and the potential to enter new markets.

    • For those who depend on aquaculture, the benefits include promoting responsible fishery management and contributing to local community livelihoods.

    • For consumers, the benefits include making conscious and responsible choices more accessible.
